La plante du mois : L’Arouman

S’il existe une plante qui a traversé l’histoire des différentes civilisations amérindiennes et qui aujourd’hui encore, reste une des plus utilisées en Amazonie c’est bien l’arouman.

C’est sous ce nom commun que l’on retrouve différentes espèces du genre Ischnosiphon, des plantes de la famille des marantacées. Elles représentent un élément majeur dans la réalisation des vanneries traditionnelles dont notamment les fameuses couleuvres qui permettent d’extraire le jus toxique du manioc broyé pour le rendre consommable.

Les deux plus grandes espèces sont les seules à être couramment exploitées en Guyane, Ischnosiphon arouma et Ischnosiphon obliquus, mais d’autres espèces se rencontrent ça et là en forêt guyanaise.

If there is a plant that has gone through the history of the different Amerindian civilizations and which still today remains one of the most used in the Amazon, it is the aruman.

It is under this common name that we find different species of the genus Ischnosiphon, plants of the Marantaceae family. They represent a major element in the realization of traditional basketry, including the famous snakes which allow the toxic juice to be extracted from crushed cassava to make it edible.

The two largest species are the only ones commonly exploited in French Guiana, Ischnosiphon arouma and Ischnosiphon obliquus, but other species are found here and there in the Guyanese forest.
