Malgré le Covid, la Guyane aura réussi à faire son carnaval

La Guyane lance ses jours gras aujourd’hui avec des défilés dans plusieurs communes et des orchestres qui vont animer les trois prochaines soirées. Moins de groupes ont défilé, moins de cavaliers et touloulous ont dansé. Mais ce carnaval sous protocole sanitaire, dans une période de reflux de l’épidémie, a montré qu’avec des précautions, il était possible de faire la fête.

Dans les poches arrières des cavaliers, le masque chirurgical cohabite parfois avec la serviette qui leur permet de s’éponger entre deux danses. Bienvenue chez Polina par temps de Covid-19. Après une édition 2020 où aucune manifestation officielle ne s’est tenue, la Guyane a tenté de faire son carnaval malgré le virus. Avec quelques semaines de retard sur l’Épiphanie, les festivités ont démarré fin janvier, alors que le reflux de la vague omicron était déjà bien engagé.

D’abord dans les rues de Cayenne et Saint-Laurent du Maroni, fin janvier. Comme chaque année, l’ambiance est montée crescendo dimanche après dimanche. Jusqu’à l’apothéose de la Grande Parade hier et des trois jours à venir. Malgré seulement 17 groupes dans les rues de Cayenne, contre parfois une quarantaine pour ce dernier dimanche. « Ça a été difficile à organiser, mais on a fait comme on a pu, en mettant en place un protocole sanitaire, témoigne Alexis Noha, président du Comité des carnavals et festivals de Cayenne. L’an dernier, j’étais triste, fâché. Cette année, je suis quand même satisfait. Le public et les groupes ont joué le jeu. »

Mayouri Tchò Nèg : « On a su s’adapter »

Parmi ces groupes, Mayouri Tchô Nèg a tenu le haut du pavé cayennais. « Ce n’était pas un carnaval comme les autres, mais on a su s’adapter, témoigne Jacques Ho Sang Fouk. En rentrant sur le parcours, on porte le masque. On l’enlève ensuite, parce que c’est difficile de défiler avec. » Ce n’est pas la moindre des adaptations. « Habituellement, on achète les tissus au Suriname ou au Brésil, parce que c’est moins cher. Là, on a tout acheté en Guyane. On a pris du retard. Les couturières ont commencé à confectionner les costumes fin décembre, au lieu de début novembre. » Si dans les défilés, les jeunes danseuses et les musiciens ont mis la même énergie communicative, cette saison de carnaval leur laisse une pointe de déception : « Ils me demandaient où on irait défiler. Mais on n’a pu faire que Cayenne, Kourou dimanche dernier et Sinnamary ce lundi. »

Les dancings ont ouvert début février. A l’extérieur de chez Nana, à Cayenne, l’habituel village n’est pas réapparu. A l’intérieur, l’orchestre Akouman n’a pas attiré grand-monde. Covid ou non, il confirme qu’en dehors des Mécènes et les Blue Stars, aucun orchestre n’arrive plus à faire sortir les touloulous.

Chez Polina, passe sanitaire et bars réorganisés

Chez Polina, où les Blue Stars féroces ont déménagé, l’ambiance est toute autre, avec une affluence honnête, sans être folle, dès le premier samedi. A l’entrée, le passe sanitaire est contrôlé avant même le ticket. Vaccinés, remis d’une infection de moins de quatre mois ou testés négatifs depuis moins de vingt-quatre heures passent sans protestations le portail de l’université. « On a vraiment une très bonne clientèle, très disciplinée », se réjouit Bernadette Sinaï, la patronne des lieux.

A l’intérieur, les bars ont été réorganisés pour éviter la foire d’empoigne et les attroupements que provoquaient invariablement le devoir de désaltérer son touloulou. Il n’aura fallu, en revanche, que quelques heures, le premier samedi, pour que les cavaliers arrêtent de remettre leur masque entre deux danses, comme cela avait été demandé. Ce que le préfet Thierry Queffelec a pu constater lors d’une visite sur place le samedi suivant. « Il nous a fait des félicitations pour la manière dont ça se passait, relate Bernadette Sinaï. Le capitaine de gendarmerie, qui est passé le premier samedi, aussi ! »

« On s’y prendra plus tôt »

L’affluence, en baisse depuis de nombreuses années, a poursuivi la tendance. « C’est moyen », reconnaît la gérante. Certains sont rebutés par le Covid-19. Comme Victor, cavalier émérite qui a initié l’auteur de ces lignes aux mystères du carnaval. L’épidémie lui a passé le goût de la foule. D’autres par la hausse des prix ou le passe sanitaire. Pas tous ! Chez ceux qui ont fait le choix de ne pas se faire vacciner, à quelques heures du Face à face du dimanche gras, on se repasse le tuyau du drive de l’aéroport, ouvert le dimanche matin, entre une blague sur le traitement à la « Belle Ca-Zeneca » et un haussement de sourcils quand on suggère de se rendre plutôt à l’Encre pour recevoir son vaccin. Si les yeux sont rivés sur les festivités des derniers jours, certains ont déjà dans un coin de la tête l’hypothèse qu’il faille faire carnaval avec le virus encore longtemps : « On s’y prendra plus tôt », promet-on chez Mayouri Tchò Nèg.

But we could only do Cayenne, Kourou last Sunday and Sinnamary this Monday."

The dance halls opened in early February. Outside Nana's home in Cayenne, the usual village has not reappeared. Inside, the Akouman orchestra did not attract many people. Covid or not, he confirms that apart from the Patrons and the Blue Stars, no orchestra can manage to bring out the Touloulous.

At Polina, sanitary pass and reorganized bars

At Polina, where the fierce Blue Stars have moved, the atmosphere is quite different, with an honest attendance, without being crazy, from the first Saturday. At the entrance, the sanitary pass is checked even before the ticket. Vaccinated, recovered from an infection less than four months old or tested negative for less than twenty-four hours pass the university portal without protest. "We really have a very good clientele, very disciplined", rejoices Bernadette Sinaï, the owner of the place.

Inside, the bars have been reorganized to avoid the rat race and the crowds that invariably caused the duty to quench your thirst. "We'll get there sooner"

Attendance, which had been declining for many years, continued the trend. "It's average," admits the manager. Some are put off by the Covid-19.
