Focus sur l'Inkatu, la tueuse silencieuse

Sous ce terme d’origine bushinengué, se cachent les espèces de figuiers étrangleurs dont Ficus nymphaeifolia est la plus connue en Guyane.

C’est une plante à l’écologie particulière dont les premiers stades de vie sont épiphytes. Une graine, déposée sur une branche haute d’un arbre par un oiseau, un singe ou toutes autres espèces arboricoles, va commencer à germer dans ce milieu où la lumière abonde, et au fur et à mesure de la croissance de la jeune plante, étendre ses racines vers le sol de la forêt.

La plante devenue alors hémi-épiphyte, projette de nouvelles racines qui vont progressivement entourer en s’élargissant l’arbre qui servait jusqu’à maintenant de support. Littéralement étouffé par son hôte, celui-ci finira par mourir pour laisser place à un tronc creux formé par les racines du figuier qui se sont soudées pour donner une structure solide et indépendante.

Under this term of bushinengue origin, hide the species of strangling fig trees, of which Ficus nymphaeifolia is the best known in French Guiana.

It is a plant with a special ecology whose early life stages are epiphytic. A seed, deposited on a high branch of a tree by a bird, a monkey or any other arboreal species, will begin to germinate in this medium where there is abundant light, and as the young plant grows, extend its roots to the forest floor.

The plant then become hemi-epiphyte, projects new roots which will gradually surround, widening, the tree that until now served as a support. Literally suffocated by its host, it will eventually die to give way to a hollow trunk formed by the roots of the fig tree which have united to give a solid and independent structure.
